Review: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Writer: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long

The Plot:
Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) is the owner of Average Joe's Gym, a small facility that doesn't get much business. There's only five customers. It doesn't help that there's a huge, modern, and just generally better gym right across the street that goes by the name of Globo Gym, run by White Goodman (Ben Stiller). Average Joe's is falling on hard times, and is racking up a huge debt. Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor), who works for the bank, tells Peter that the debt has come up to $50,000 and that he'd have to come up with the money in 30 days or else Globo Gym will own the place.

Peter enlists the help of his customers/ friends to come up with the money. That's when they decide to join a dodgeball competition where the grand prize is $50,000. The catch? Globo Gym also has a team, and is working their way to the final so they can beat Average Joe's and take over the gym. It's a real winner-takes-all competition.

Comments:
Dodgeball is one of those films that you come across and think it's a ridiculous concept. I mean, come on, two gym owners competing in a dodgeball competition? But, it was really well crafted. There were so many wise cracks and moments when you just think "did that just happen?" and just plain, good ol' fashioned slapstick comedy.

Vaughn and Stiller both pulled off amazing performances, especially Stiller. Every character was cast perfectly, and the movie was filled with great cameos and guest appearances (Lance Armstrong, Chuck Norris and William Shatner, just to name a few). With so many great surprises, the movie just kept getting better, even if it did start off a bit slow.

Rating: 4/5
